Certified Organic Blueberries
Products
At our farm we began rehabilitating a portion of the original Denman Dairy Farm back to its original fertile soil in 1998. Our meadows sit at the toe of Whitehorse Mountain. We opened our fruit stand in July 2006. We sell direct from the fruitstand and, as our crop yields increase, we will be seeing many of you in town at farmer’s markets. Our farmer’s markets attendance will be updated on the hours of operation panel on the homepage. Our products include, fresh blueberries, honey, frozen blueberries, blueberry farm fertilized and ph balanced mulch, and farm T-shirts.
Blueberries
We sell three varieties of certified organic blueberries.
Spartans: This plant produces a large, flavorful berry, with firm consistency that freezes well. They have been less popular as a large production fruit since they are somewhat particular about their environment. Once happily settled in they mature into a full highbush blueberry with lush foliage, high fruit yield, excellent fresh flavor, and beautiful red canes in winter. Although Spartan blooms late, it is the first fruit on at our farm starting in the second week of July and producing for approximately 4 weeks.
Rubels: Although there have been many varities of blueberry introduced since 1912, Rubels remain as an outstanding wild variety that is smaller, deep blue, with a highly intense blueberry flavor that provides excellent fresh eating, exceptional sweetness in cooking, and stability in freezing. Rubel is higher in antioxidant properties than many other blueberry varieties and this may well be because it has not experienced engineering for agricultural purposes. Rubels begin to ripen in the third and fourth weeks of July.
Jersey is a long-standing market favorite as a late July fruit. It produces a sweet fruit of medium size (similar to the size most frequently found in the supermarket produce section) that provides excellent fresh eating.
We have been experimenting with freezing our fruits using IQF methods. We are delighted to find that the Spartans and Rubels freeze and store exceptionally well maintaining high quality and stability over the many months of fall, winter and spring. We will be applying for WSDA approval of our freezing practices so that we can offer these exceptional quality frozen fruits in the upcoming seasons.
Fruit prices follow the market rate. We price our we-pick and u-pick fruits below standard organic prices. By selling direct to you, we are able to support our fields properly and give you an excellent value in organic fruit.
Honey
We also carry honey from the beehives and bees that pollinated the fields. This is Fancy grade honey without the after bite often found in clover based honey. The packaging makes a wonderful gift. Priced at $5.00/jar
Frozen Blueberries
Frozen blueberries are available in 2 pound bags for $10.00 per bag ($5.00 per pound). Berries are individually quality frozen within 2-3 days of picking to insure flavor and can be purchased at the farm in the off-season.
Blueberry Farm Mulch
Since making mulch is an ongoing part of our organic field practices and is designed to promote plant growth, we found it a natural outgrowth of our daily life to offer it to you for use in your yard. We enrich this mulch with organic fertilizers and ph balance it to encourage growth in home grown small fruits and vegetables. Mulch sacks equate in size to the 55 quart sacks available in other fertilized mulches and cost $10.00 each.
T-Shirts
We just happen to think our logo is pretty so we put it on the back of a T-shirt with our name in small print, pocket position on the front. These are nice quality white cotton shirts and sell for $10.00 each.
